Our Mission

Carbon Balance Initiative is an NGO initiative born out of the University of Oxford.

We strive to put conditions on fossil fuel production to protect the climate from any remaining fossil fuel use. We work with the climate movement, academia and policymakers to achieve 1.5°C, store carbon and protect nature.

More specifically, we support policymakers with research and long-term policy thinking that keep fossil fuel producers accountable and ensure we reach durable net zero.

As an NGO, we educate and advocate on two main topics: (1) Achieving durable and geological net zero, in which any carbon dioxide still extracted at the point of net zero is stored permanently in geological storage and (2) Regulating for producer responsibility, in which oil and gas companies are held accountable for their emissions and responsible for storing any remaining carbon extracted up to the time of net zero.

Our advocacy efforts are focused primarily on the UK and the EU, with some projects in Norway and internationally, including previously at COP28.
